Oregon State Men’s A Cappella Group Prepares for Competition, at the LCCC
LINCOLN CITY – On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Lincoln City Cultural Center will proudly welcome the talented young vocalists of Outspoken. Showtime is 7 pm, and admission will be by donation.
Outspoken is the premier men’s a cappella group at Oregon State University, with thousands of followers. The group performs contemporary and classical hits while constantly working to improve their musicality and share their love for a cappella music with the world through competition, shows, and recording.
Over a decade ago, founders Jason Taylor and David Emmert were inspired to start the first a cappella group at their beloved school, Oregon State University. Through word of mouth they formed a group of 4-5 singers practicing in a basement, with walls taped with sheet music. Outspoken grew to an eight-member ensemble, and began with small gigs at sororities and local functions, before its first large-scale performance at the campus-wide SING!
In 2006, Outspoken competed in its first International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, and made it to the semi-finals before losing to the group who would go on to win nationals. For a debut appearance this was still a very motivating performance and Outspoken’s drive has improved ever since. In the years following Outspoken has grown substantially and moved to a group of 12-15 men with an increasing fan basis on the Oregon State University campus and the west coast a cappella community. Today the group has competed at ICCAs multiple times, recorded four albums, and still strives to be a better a cappella ensemble every day through gigging, competing, touring, and performing exclusive shows at OSU.
The group will be at the beach for a rehearsal retreat, and will be performing some of their competition selections for the crowd at the LCCC. The LCCC invites you to hear these young men sing, on stage at the center, 7 pm on Saturday, Jan. 17. For more information, call 541-994-9994.
